Any products work better than others? National Geographic (California), Delorme?, ExpertGPS… Do the smaller software packages require scans of USGS maps?

Maybe a side question,,, The best software for integrating geo-encoded tiffs (pic files) so that I can plot way points.

There has to be a way to do plot a trip from home, print the map, upload the waypoints to the GPS and gooo…
I’m not looking for software hat works “ON” the Garmin eTrex… But works “WITH” the Garmin eTrex… I can use EasyGPS to upload waypoints and tracks… Plus the eTrex doesn’t support maps being uploaded or interactive mapping on the device itself…
